BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) — More than 1,000 firefighters are battling a wildfire that's destroyed more than a dozen homes in California's Big Sur region.

As of last night, the fire had burned through 1 ½ square miles.

The blaze began Sunday and has been fueled by dry vegetation and winds. It's 74 percent contained but fire officials are hoping for full containment by Friday evening.
