2 DeSoto Mayors Appointed After Deaths Have Been Re-elected

LOGANSPORT, La. (AP) — Two DeSoto Parish mayors who were first appointed after deaths have won their second full terms in DeSoto Parish.

The Times reports that Logansport voters re-elected Katherine Freeman, while Euricka Mayweather remains mayor of South Mansfield. Both are Democrats.

Complete but unofficial returns give Freeman 80 percent of the vote against Republican challenger William David Downing. Mayweather got 56 percent against fellow Democrat Alan Yarbrough.

A total of 573 votes were cast in Logansport and 170 in South Mansfield.

Freeman was appointed mayor in November 2007 after the death of her husband, Dennis Freeman.

Mayweather was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Dessie Lee Patterson, who was killed in her home in March 2008.
