Federal Government forecasters are calling for an above normal hurricane season this year. NOAA Administrator Dr Jane Lubchenco says it will likely include 12 to 18 named storms. Lubchenco says of those, three to six could become major hurricanes. Lubchenco says warmer than normal ocean waters are the reason for the more than active hurricane predictions. She also says we are still in La Nina Conditions this year even though they are expected to weaken. She says this year's hurricane season will not be as active as last years. (A major hurricane has not made US landfall in five years.)
