The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals will hear a Lafayette case next month on whether or not the U.S. District Court in Lafayette went too far when they shut down a website critical of Lafayette's police chief, department and other officials.

The issue is what are the rights of government to halt public dissent of employees who are suing their employer.

Some former and current police officers have sued the police department, Lafayette City Parish Government, Police Chief Jim Craft and other government officials in federal court.

The lawsuit was filed in June of last year.  The officers allege racial discrimination, fraud among other allegations within the department.

The officers are seeking a monetary award.
