6 Arrested For Oyster Violations

Six Southwest Louisiana residents have been cited for alleged oyster violations on lower Calcasieu Lake.State Wildlife and Fisheries agents cited 52-year-old Jerell Dwayne Christopher, 71-year-old Carroll Henderson Laws and 53-year-old Waverly Evans Levere, all of Abbeville; 54-year-old Matthew Gaskins Jr. of Lake Charles; 18-year-old Hubern Ray Doxey Jr. of Cameron; and 21-year-old Angela Kay Trahan of Creole for unlawfully taking oysters from state water bottoms.

Christopher was also cited for failing to display proper numbers on his oyster vessel. Doxey was also cited for taking undersized oysters from a natural reef.

Officials say the suspects' oyster boats were seen working a closed reef by agents in an aerial patrol. Agents seized 22 sacks of oysters and returned them to the water. They also seized the three vessels and dredges.
