The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office has released more information about Saturday's shooting at a motel that left one man dead and a woman recovering at a New Orleans area hospital.

Detectives say that 36-year-old Vernon Singleton of Morgan City shot his female victim in the face while she was lying next to him in bed.  Singleton then turned the gun on himself, inflicting a single fatal gunshot wound to the head.

The victim was able to leave the room and get help from the person at the front desk of the motel.

The woman, a 26-year-old from Bayou L'Ourse, was taken to a New Orleans hospital for treatment where she is listed in stable condition.  Detectives have not released a motive for the shooting.

The case remains under investigation.
