Abbeville Motorcyclist Dies In Two-Vehicle Crash

An Abbeville man is dead after being involved in a two-vehicle crash on La. Hwy 82 in Vermilion Parish this morning.

Master Trooper Brooks David reported Stephen Gikey succumbed to injuries sustained when his motorcycle collided with Mitchel Thibeaux's Chrysler 200 near West Jane Street at approximatelt 11 a.m.

Gikey and Thibeaux were traveling in opposing directions when Thibeaux, who was turning left onto West Jane Street, failed to yield to Gikey. The motorcyclist attempted to avoid the collision by applying his brakes and laying his bike down on the asphault, but still collided with Thibeaux's car.

Gikey, who was not wearing a Department of Transportation-approved helmet, suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at Abbeville General Hospital.

Thibeaux was cited for failure to yield. The crash is still under investigation
