According to a press release from the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Wayne Melancon will not seek to be re-elected this October.

Melancon says he plans to retire from law enforcement in 2016.

Melancon says it's been a rewarding time for him to spend so much of his life in law enforcement, but he is ready for " a new chapter in my life".

Melancon adds,

"I began my law enforcement career with the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office in 1977 at the age of 25. Throughout my career, I have served as a corrections officer, a patrol officer, a detective and as Chief Criminal Deputy. In 2004, I was honored to be chosen as Sheriff by the people of Acadia Parish".

Melancon says he is looking forward to travelling and spending time with his family.

Melancon says,

"As Sheriff, I have always strived to do the right thing for the right reasons. It has been an honor to serve and protect the people of Acadia Parish. I would also like to thank the Acadia Parish Deputies for their support, dedication and professionalism to me and to the people of Acadia Parish".

The sheriff says he will pray that the next person chosen for the job of Sheriff will help the Parish move forward.

Melancon adds in his press release,

"Thank you Acadia Parish for your kindness and support throughout my career.  I will always be grateful".
