Ackal, 2 Employees Plead Not Guilty To New Civil Rights Violations
Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal and two of his employees pleaded not guilty Wednesday for charges related to inmate beatings that arose from a superseding indictment released last week.
According to our news partner, KATC, Ackal, his top deputy Gerald Savoy and former Capt. Mark Frederick were charged in the superseding indictment for a series of beatings that occurred in 2011.
Ackal appeared before magistrate Judge Patrick Hanna with attorney Richard Haik who entered the not guilty plea Wednesday.
Gerald Savoy's attorney, Randal McCann and Fredrick's attorney court-appointed attorney Frank Granger, entered not guilty pleas for both of their defendants today, as well.
KATC reported all three men were released on their own recognizance with stipulations that they are not allowed to carry guns.
