The Alexandria City Council will take up for vote on Tuesday an ordinance that would eliminate all smoking in public workplaces in the city.

The ordinance is being proposed by council President Roosevelt Johnson.

Mayor Jacques Roy and members of his administration said they were not consulted prior to the development of the ordinance, and they have offered no endorsement for the ordinance. They are encouraging citizens, as well as bar and hotel owners, to attend Tuesday's meeting and voice their opinions.

A public meeting held in June showed strong opposition from bar owners.

If approved, the ordinance would go into effect 90 days from Tuesday.
