For the first time ever, Americans are expected to buy more bottled water than carbonated beverages this year, according to the market research firm Euromonitor.

LSU Health New Orleans Professor of Family Medicine Dr. Herbert Muncie says it’s good news that people are trying to stay away from high calorie sodas.

The projection finds Americans will buy 27 gallons of bottled water over 26 gallons of soda, a year.

Muncie says we’ve been seeing this trend slowly creeping up over the last few years and he expects it to continue. He says besides the health benefits, many people are switching to bottled water because recent tap water quality scares in other states.

Muncie says parents should be influencing their kids to pick up a water bottle rather than a soda.
