West Feliciana Parish sheriff's deputies have arrested a Louisiana State Penitentiary employee accused of trying to smuggle more than a pound of marijuana into the prison.

Maj. Archer Lee, chief of the sheriff's Criminal Investigations Division, says officers found 26.2 ounces of marijuana on 33-year-old Derrick K. Cavalier when he was stopped Saturday as he entered the prison's front gate. It was not immediately known what job Cavalier held at the prison or his current employment status.

Cavalier, of St. Francisville, was booked on charges of introduction of contraband into a penal institution and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. He remained jailed Monday on $60,000 bond.

Authorities say Cavalier gave officers permission to search his home, where they allegedly found another 12 ounces of marijuana.
