Anti-Crime Rally Planned Tuesday In French Quarter

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Residents and businesses in New Orleans' French Quarter are calling for more police protection. They have scheduled a rally Tuesday in Jackson Square.

WDSU-TV reports that the group's Facebook page says "Violent Crime is on the rise in the French Quarter, and it needs to stop now."

They want action by Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Councilwoman Nadine Ramsey and New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison.

Landrieu asked Gov. Bobby Jindal on Friday to send troopers to support the city while it works to fill its ranks.

The head of state police, Col. Michael Edmonson, tells Nola.com ' The Times-Picayune that he'd do that if he could without leaving other parts of the state short-handed.

Police say a 32-year-old man reported being sexually assaulted Friday in the French Quarter.
