As Houston Deal Falls Through, LSU Still In Play For Lane Kiffin As OC
Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin will not be the next head coach at Houston, despite national reports stating he was a shoo-in for the gig.
Houston promoted their offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to the head coaching position for the Cougars.
Kiffin's agent Jimmy Sexton and Houston's President, A.D., and board of regents could not agree on the buyout clause in the contract, leading the Cougars to move away from Kiffin.
Kiffin was reportedly putting together his staff and preparing to recruit for Houston as soon as this weekend before final stumbling block of the buyout went south.
LSU has been interested in hiring Kiffin as their next offensive coordinator under Ed Orgeron's new staff.
For a period, it looked like the door was shut on Kiffin joining the Tigers, but with Houston's hiring of Applewhite, LSU is still in play for Kiffin as the next OC.
The University of South Florida is reportedly interested in hiring Kiffin as their next head coach. Former Texas coach Charlie Strong is also a candidate, having met with USF officials about the position.
USF lost their head coach Willie Taggert earlier this week when he accepted the head coaching job at Oregon.
If USF decides Strong is their guy, the chances of Kiffin being LSU's next OC become very likely.
