DONALDSONVILLE, La. (AP) — The Ascension Parish Council has voted to give themselves a 33 percent pay increase.

Approved on a 7-3 vote Thursday, the increase will boost the pay of the recently seated 11-member council from $1,200 to $1,600 per month and take effect this year, the first raise for the body since 1997.

Before the raise motion passed, The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/KkhAtn ) a substitute motion to hold an election on the raise on Nov. 6 and delay when it would take effect until Jan. 1, 2016, when the next council assumes office, failed on a 3-7 vote.

The pay increase proposal drew no public comment during meeting in Donaldsonville.
