A dramatic video showing a group of cypress trees literally being swallowed by the Assumption Parish Sinkhole is just the latest incident at the watery hole that is now close to 25 acres in size near Bayou Corne. Parish officials say that the collapse, or “slough in,” happened around 5:30pm followed a periodic series of underground tremors and “burps” of gas and debris earlier on Wednesday (8/21).

The video was taken by John Boudreaux, director of the parish Office of Homeland Security. Boudreaux was checking up on the sinkhole site Wednesday because of the burps and recent tremors.

I was just standing there and I pointed out, ‘Hey, it looks like they’re moving. It looks like they’re moving,

At that point Boudreaux whipped out his camera and was able to catch a scene that looked like it came straight out of an action movie. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a movie and is just the latest activity related to the sinkhole that has caused the evacuation of more than 350 residents in the town of Bayou Corne.

The sinkhole has been attributed to extensive drilling and mining in the area that caused a large salt cave to collapse. in addition to the town gradually disappearing into the sinkhole, many residents are concerned with the natural gas and crude oil that is now coming to the surface.

For more information on the sinkhole situation, just watch the video below. If you’re just as intrigued as I am, I would highly suggest checking out the full story here.
