Update 11:53 a.m. - Trooper Stephen Hammons says the device has been rendered safe and Johnston Street is now open. The investigation has been turned over to Lafayette Police.

11:14 a.m. - A "suspicious package" is being investigated right now at the Chevron on Johnston Street near Camellia Boulevard.

Trooper Stephen Hammons says Louisiana State Police, Lafayette Police and Lafayette Fire Department Haz-Mat officials are on the scene. Hammons says they are evacuating the Chevron as well as the snow-ball stand right behind the station. Hammons says there are several other businesses in the immediate area that have requested a shelter in place.

As of right now, it's a developing situation and Hammons says they are taking as many safety precautions as they can. He says they do have specialized equipment on the way from the Lake Charles area.
