PIERRE PART, La. (AP) — Alligators treed a Baton Rouge couple whose boat sank in choppy waters on Lake Verrett.

Deputies from Assumption and St. Martin parishes found Gerald and Lisa Triche early Monday, about 15 feet up in cypress trees along the lake's edge in Assumption Parish.

Gerald Triche tells The Advocate that his 14-foot boat began having mechanical trouble Sunday evening, and he was working on the boat when waves rolled over its stern and swamped it. He says that as he and his wife swam toward cypress trees on shore, they could see alligators swimming toward them.

He says that after several hours in the trees, they began feeling weak. Triche says he tied his wife to the tree with a life jacket and himself with an Ace bandage.
