A McKinley High School teacher has been arrested after punching a student in the face during an argument about the student's attempts to go to his locker.

According to reports, East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the school at 6:50 a.m. Wednesday in reference to the argument between 61-year-old Richard Glasgow Haywood and a 15-year-old student.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks says the student was trying to go to his locker when Haywood told him it was too late. They exchanged words and Hicks says Haywood then pushed the student, who pushed him back. Haywood then punched the student in the face, causing swelling to his eye.

Haywood was booked with one count of cruelty to a juvenile and later released on $5,000 bond.
