A farmer in China's Sichuan Province is out 20,000 Yuan (roughly the equivalent of $3,000) because it was eaten by bugs. Mashable.com reports, Qi Shengli buried the money under his bedroom for safe keeping "a year or two ago" (He's not sure how long). When he went to retrieve the cash, it had been so badly chewed up by termites, the bills were beyond repair.

The story does have a happy ending, of sorts. An artist in Beijing offered to purchase the tattered notes for their full original value. He plans to make a piece of instructional art about the dangers of storing money at home.

Qi said he buried the money because he didn't want to deal with a  bank.
