Best For Home Defense – AR, Shotgun Or Handgun?

Glenn Fleming of Acadiana Gun Works joined 'Mornings With Ken and Bernie' today for another edition of 'Firearms Friday'.

With comments made by Vice-President Joe Biden a few months back there's been a lot of discussion about the best weapon for home defense and we asked Fleming if a handgun, automatic rifle or shotgun would be best. According to Fleming,

There a few things to consider. Where you live. How many people live in your home? You want to think this thing out before you buy anything. Shotguns are good but they will penetrate walls but they will put an intruder down. An automatic rifle will put an intruder down but will also penetrate a wall and another wall and possibly an another wall. A pistol I find is the best thing because you can buy a little lock box and keep it near your bed for quick easy access.

In addition to purchasing the right weapon for the job Fleming said there is one more component to home defense,

No matter what you get be sure to get some training with it and develop a plan on how you will use that weapon. You don't want to try to learn how to use a new weapon for the first time in the dark when your family's safety is a stake.

With New Year's Eve coming up next week Glenn had words of warning concerning celebrations.

I really shouldn't have to say this but stupid people do stupid things.Do not touch a gun if you have had adult beverages and refrain from celebratory gunfire. If you shoot into the air, whatever you shoot up will come down. There's a report of an Amish guy who shot a black powder rifle into the air last year and killed a girl.
