A New Iberia woman is in police custody after she struck a bicyclist with her car who died from his injuries.

Sheriff's spokesperson Maj. Ryan Turner reported 48-year-old Geraldine Jones was arrested and charged with careless operation of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license after she collided with a bicycle on Corinne Street at about 2 p.m. Friday.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Though deputies do not suspect impairment played a part in the crash, toxicology samples were taken to be tested by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

The crash is still under investigation; Jones may face more charges, according to deputies.
