The day after the NFL regular season ends is known as "Black Monday."  It is the day many head coaches are given their walking papers.

And, here it is, just 10:15 on Black Monday morning, and the count is five coaches and four general managers.

The Minnesota Vikings' win over Green Bay yesterday knocked the Chicago Bears out of the playoff picture and may have cost Lovie Smith his job.  Smith was fired today after the Bears missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six years despite starting this season 7-1.

The Philadelphia Eagles fired Andy Reid, the NFL's longest tenured coach after 14 years.  Reid had more than twice as many wins as any coach in Eagles' history, but Philly was only 4-12 this season.  Reid was scheduled to make $6 million next season.

In Kansas City, Romeo Crennel is out.  The Chiefs were 2-14 and last in many categories in the league, including points per game and turnover margin.  The Chiefs say no decision has been made on the fate of General Manager Scott Pioli.

In Cleveland, coach Pat Shurmer and General Manager Tom Heckert were both canned.  The Browns will start over, again, after a 5-11 season.  The Browns have lost at least eleven games each of the last five seasons.  Shurmer was 9-23 in his two seasons.

Reports coming out of San Diego indicate coach Norv Turner and General Manager A. J. Smith are both out.  Turner was 55-40 in seven seasons in San Diego, but the Chargers have missed the playoffs the last three years.  Smith is taking the heat for the erosion of talent on the roster.

Two other general managers have gotten their walking papers.

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum is out, but Rex Ryan is staying.  Tannenbaum had been the GM since 2006.  The Jets missed the playoffs for the second straight year this season.

And, in Jacksonville, Jaguars GM Gene Smith has been fired.  Whoever the new GM is will decide the fate of Jags' head coach Mike Mullarkey.

Stick around.  It's not lunchtime yet.
