BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Blue Cross and Blue Shield policyholders will soon be able to compare the costs and effectiveness of different types of treatment for a variety of conditions.

This spring, Louisiana's largest health insurer will offer customers Wiser Health, a personalized online decision-making tool that assesses possible treatments. The company says consumers can use that information to select the most cost-effective and cost-appropriate treatment for them. They say the result is improved health and lower costs.

Dr. David Carmouche, Blue Cross chief medical officer, tells The Advocate being sick or injured can be stressful. Carmouche says the Wiser Health tools provide easy-to-understand information about their health conditions so Blue Cross members feel more in control, and to choose the treatments that work for the patients.
