Through an aid, John Boehner's decision to leave Congress was announced today.

The Speaker of the House is planning to retire at the end of October leaving the House leadership position up for grabs.

Lafayette Congressman Charles Boustany said in a statement,

"The Speakership is no easy job. John Boehner served our country and our Conference with distinction and I am grateful for his contributions to the House and to the Republican Party. I wish John all the best in this next chapter of life."

There is a battle going on among Republicans over funding for Planned Parenthood. Many in the Republican party want Boehner to include the defunding of Planned Parenthood in any legislation that would be passed to keep the government open past Wednesday's impending shut down.
