Leaders in the community of Breaux Bridge are working on efforts to raise at least $500,000 to strip and repaint the Bayou Teche Drawbridge.

This morning KPEL was joined by Breaux Bridge City Councilman Gary Champagne to tell us about their efforts to get the bridge painted.

Champagne says, "the bridge has lead, and it's going to need a containment thing around it" when the work is done.

He says making sure the bridge gets stripped and painted is a priority for him and many in his community because the bridge is important to the identity of the city.

Champagne says anyone wishing to donate to their effort to raise funds can visit the Community Foundation of Acadiana website.

Champagne says the state just simply does not have enough money to fund the project.
