After becoming the leading vote-getter in the primary election, Brian Pope, a former captain with the Lafayette City Marshal's Office, built on the momentum to win the office currently held by his former boss Earl "Nickey" Picard.

Leading up to the runoff election, during a candidate forum, Pope mentioned Picard as an icon in Lafayette who did a great job running the office. Picard, who at that time had announced that neither candidate would get his vote, would eventually change his mind and endorse Pope.
This will be the first time someone other than Picard has held the office since 1984.
