LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — Beginning July 1, rates to ride the Calcasieu Parish Public Transit System will increase for the first time in nine years.KPLC-TV reports the parish Police Jury approved the rate increase which will bump the costs between 10 cents and $1.

The transit system operates as a curb-to-curbside service sponsored by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

The system caters to those who meet certain income requirements while also serving as a means of transportation for the sick and elderly who have frequent medical appointments.
