VIDALIA, La. (AP) — The City of Vidalia is installing surveillance camera systems throughout its new municipal complex. And plans are to eventually put cameras around the city.

The Natchez Democrat reports that the Vidalia Police Department is being outfitted with 18 infrared and night vision cameras throughout the building. Two on the outside can zoom in on sites two miles away.

City Hall and the fire department are next on the list to get cameras.

City Information Technology Administrator Bob Buseck said the city's overall goal includes installing fiber optics throughout the city to make broadband service available. The fiber optics also would allow the police department to control security cameras at the riverfront and, eventually, throughout the city.
