An accused car thief couldn't drive himself out of trouble. Carencro Police say as they were responding to a stolen car complaint on Potier Road, they got another call from someone in the same general area saying someone tried to do the same thing with their car, damaging the ignition in the unsuccessful attempt. When Officers found the stolen, they tried to pull the thief over, but they say he tried to get away. The suspect, later identified as Hiawatha Jones of Carencro, crashed the vehicle into a mailbox at a home on Rampart Street. Authorities say he then tried to ran away, but was quickly caught. Authorities say they then learned Jones had taken items from another car he stole and hid them. Police later found those items, totaling about $3,000. Jones is in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center awaiting bond.
