Funeral arrangements have not yet been set for Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Lieutenant Greg Lavergne.

The veteran of the Sheriff's department collapsed and died suddenly Wednesday while volunteering his time coaching the wrestling team at Carencro High School.

The 48-year-old was with the Lafayette Sheriff's Office for more than 25 years serving in the patrol division as well as a watch commander, and he had been volunteering at the school for ten years.

No cause of death has been determined in Lavergne's case yet.

Lafayette's assistant superintendent Sandra Billeaudeau says that social workers, extra counselors and mental health supervisors were on hand at the school yesterday to give students an opportunity to talk about Lavergne's death if they needed too.

"It is with heavy hearts that we regret to inform you of the untimely death of one of our fellow employees, Lt. Greg Lavergne," the Sheriff's Office posted on its official Facebook page Thursday afternoon. "He served the community and our office with great dedication and respect; his absence leaves us with tremendous sorrow. We ask that you keep his family in your prayers."
