Lafayette, Louisiana, will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Adolphe Sax --the inventor of the saxophone—with the following events:

April 22-28, 2015

Acadiana Center for the Arts has an exhibit about the life of Adolphe Sax, available to the public until early next week. Opening hours available on the AcA website.

A once-in-a-lifetime ensemble of 80 saxophone musicians, with renowned Belgian guest saxophonist Stephane Mercier, will play in Lafayette in front of Le Centre International at 1:30 pm and again at Festival International de Louisiane at Parc Sans Souci/ Scène Popeyes Pavillion de Cuisine at 4:30 pm.

The ensemble is made up of university students and faculty as well as professional saxophonists mainly from Louisiana and Texas.

Stephane Mercier has received many awards celebrating his talent as a musician and currently lives in Brussels, Belgium. (a bio and photos are attached)

The exhibit at AcA is made possible thanks to Stella Artois Belgium Beer and Wallonie-Bruxelles International.  The Consulate General of Belgium in Atlanta made possible the participation of Stephane Mercier. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette School of Music is responsible for communicating with the musicians, arranging the music and directing of Sax 200. Lafayette International Center, a division of Lafayette Consolidated Government, initiated the events and coordinated their logistics.

Le Centre International is located at 735 Jefferson Street. Acadiana Center for the Arts is located at 101 W. Vermilion Street.
