Lafayette Police Department will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint within Lafayette city limits beginning Friday night.

The checkpoint will be set up between 9 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.

According to police spokesperson Cpl. Paul Mouton, the purpose of the checkpoint is to target impaired drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or other dangerous substances.

Police are urging citizens to designate a driver if they intend to drink. By not doing so, the result could be costly fines and serious jail time.
