GENEVA (AP) — Swiss officials say the hijacker of an Ethiopian Airlines plane traveling from the Ethiopian capital to Rome was the plane's co-pilot.

An airport official in Geneva says the co-pilot wanted asylum in Switzerland, so he locked himself in the cockpit when the pilot stepped away to use the bathroom.

A few minutes after landing the plane in Geneva, the co-pilot climbed out of the cockpit window with a rope.

He's now in custody.
