The sale of recreational marijuana was legalized in Colorado on January 1, 2014, making Colorado the first state to allow recreational sale of marijuana to adults over 21 years of age. Since then, owners of the 37 dispensaries estimate retail sales over $5 million.

If the incredible first week numbers continue, marijuana sales in Colorado could potentially generate $600 million in annual sales, meaning $70 million in tax revenue for the state.
