BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana lawmakers have signed off on revisions to the Common Core education standards that are used in public schools.

Approval from the House and Senate education committees Tuesday leaves Gov. John Bel Edwards to decide whether the changes are rolled out in classrooms.

A 26-member review panel, created by lawmakers in response to controversy surrounding Common Core, recommended changing 21 percent of the English and math standards used in public schools.

The state education board already has agreed to the reworked standards.

Supporters of the rewrite said it makes the standards more Louisiana-specific. Opponents said the changes were largely cosmetic and the work was a rubber stamp to keep the multistate Common Core standards in place.

Senators voted 5-2 for the revisions, while House members agreed without objection.
