NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Authorities say a construction worker has died after an accident on a structure to block storm surge from a canal that breached during Hurricane Katrina. The 17th Street Canal is now protected by temporary gates and pumps.

The Army Corps of Engineers and Bob Kula of Kiewit Louisiana Co. say the man died Thursday from injuries received Wednesday while removing forms from a concrete wall. Kula said Friday that the family doesn't want his name released.

Kula and the Corps say the accident is being investigated.

The corps says the permanent closure and pumps are to be completed by early 2017.

PCCP Constructors, a joint venture of Kiewit Louisiana South Co., Traylor Bros. Inc., and the M.R. Pittman group LLC, is building such structures at three canals.
