Longtime members of the Acadian Hills Country Club say they were shocked and disappointed to learn the 49-year-old golf course had closed for good suddenly this past week.

John Davis, who won several tournaments at the course at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Interstate 49, said he learned of the closing from a friend.

"It was like losing a family member or watching a house burn down," he said. "It was always like walking into the bar on 'Cheers.' All the staff knew you by name."

On Wednesday, club officials sent a memo to members about the closure, citing rising costs, declining membership and overall financial instability as the main reasons.
