State Police say a man who had pipe bombs in his pickup when he crashed it in Lafourche Parish Monday planned to use them to celebrate Independence Day--not for any harmful purpose. State Police Trooper Bryan Zeringue says Tony Barisich faces felony charges for having the devices. Traffic on state Highway 308 near Lockport, in Lafourche Parish, was shut down for hours Monday--after Barisich lost control of his truck and crashed into a ditch. Troopers and ATF agents secured the pipe bombs and exploded them under controlled conditions. Zeringue says it appears Barisich didn't intend to hurt anyone. Barisich told investigators he made the bombs for a July 4th fireworks display.
Barisich is currently listed in stable condition at a Thibodaux hospital. Trooper Zeringue says once recovered, he'll face 10 charges of manufacturing and possessing a bomb.
