Crimes increased by 9 percent in 2013 — the highest increase since 2007 — according to statistics released Feb. 17 by the Lafayette Police Department.

Homicides and overall arrests decreased last year, but rapes, robberies and thefts went up.

Rapes increased by 55 percent, from 11 in 2012 to 17 last year. Robberies increased by 35 percent (202 to 272), thefts by 14 percent (5244 to 5995) and auto thefts by 23 percent (241 to 297).

Arrests for minors decreased notably by 16 percent, from 1177 in 2012 to 994 in 2013. Adult arrests decreased by 4 percent, along with assault (-1 percent), burglary (-4 percent) and calls for service (-4 percent).
