According to investigators, several complaints of a possible scam were coming into the department.  People were complaining about door to door salesman trying to sell them magazines.

While Chief Gibson says the company they are representing, United Circulation, is a real company, the price being charged for magazines apparently is much higher than the actual price of a typical magazine subscription.

Gibson says the magazine solicitors are giving false information to potential customers by trying to claim they are selling the magazines for a local fund raiser.  They have even gone so far as to say they have been refered to you by your neighbor.

Gibson says the Department of Justice warns that United Circulation Company charges fees in excess of the actual cost of magazines.

Gibson had this to say,

"At this time we have arrested Timothy Ray Salgado, 26 of Orland, California. He was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail on the City Ordinance Violation. However his workers have apparently left Crowley before being located. We are working to see if additional charges can be filed against Salgado. We encourage our citizens to avoid purchasing any items or making donations with people or companies that they are not familiar with."

If you belive you have had contact with one of these solicitors please call the Crowley Police Department at 783-1234.
