Death Sentence Sought In St. Martin Parish Strangling

Lady Justice

The St. Martin Parish District Attorney’s Office intends to seek the death penalty against the daughter and granddaughter of an 83-year-old Breaux Bridge woman found strangled at Lake Martin last year.

A grand jury indicted Heller Dupuis, and her daughter, Toni Dupuis, on charges of first-degree murder in the death of Jessie Messex. DA Chester Cedars says the decision to seek the death penalty for both women was based in part on the manner of the murder, and the activities of the defendants both before and after the killing. A deputy found Messex with a cord wrapped around her neck inside her car in November of last year.
