UPDATE 5:30 p.m.: The Associated Press' Louisiana Bureau reports SWAT officers arrested the shooter.

According to Louisiana State Police Master Trooper Brooks David says he believes the wounded man found this morning was in the yard.

He says deputies got that man to an ambulance, and at some point the caller began shooting from inside the house. He says the deputy was shot while a SWAT team was getting deputies away from the house.

David says the SWAT officers then arrested the gunman. He says the man was taken to a hospital for injuries. David did not know what kind of injuries he sustained.


Law enforcement is currently engaged with an active shooter responsible for shooting a St. Mary Parish Sheriff's deputy.

St. Mary Sheriff's spokesperson Traci Landry reported Highway 90 between La. 318 and La. 83 is closed while officers attempt to extract the shooter from the residence on Dumesnil Road in Ashton.

Louisiana State Police, Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Vermillion Parish Sheriff’s Office are assisting St. Mary Parish Sheriff's deputies.

Landry said deputies responded to a possible shooting at the residence at around 6 a.m. Sunday morning. Deputies found a man with injuries at the scene who was taken to a local hospital. While deputies continued to secure the scene, they were fired upon by the suspect.

One deputy was shot and transported to a local hospital.
