DHH: 5 Parish School Systems ‘Asthma-Friendly’
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — LouisianaHealth Secretary Bruce Greenstein says five more parish school systems have taught teachers and administrators how to recognize signs and symptoms of asthma and taken other measures to help students with the disease.
He says the Orleans, West Baton Rouge, Claiborne, Red River and West Carroll parish school systems have been designated asthma-friendly by the department's asthma management and prevention program.
The New Orleans area, Capital area, and Northeast and Northwest Louisianahave the state's highest asthma prevalence and hospitalization rates. DHH will bring one school district in each region into the program for each of the next three years.
Department spokesman Ken Pastorick says the New Orleans designation is for schools under the Orleans Parish School Board. It runs a handful of schools.
