With the new school year fast approaching, the Department of Health and Hospitals is reminding parents to make sure your child's shots are up to date. DHH Immunization Medical Director Dr. Frank Welch says the summer is the best time to get it done. Welch says vaccinations help prevent the return of diseases such as measles and whooping cough. He says these days it's easier than ever to get your child vaccinated. Welch says state law requires that children 4 years or older who are entering school or day-care programs in Louisiana for the first time, must have the proper vaccinations. He says there are options for families who don't have the means to see a personal pediatrician by calling their parish health unit or regional public health office.
