Basile native Douglas Deshotel will be consecrated in April as Lafayette's new bishop.

Deshotel will be taking over the duties of Bishop Jarrell who turned 75 last May, and must retire based on Canon Law.

Deshotel is the current auxillary bishop of the Diocese of Dallas, and he will stay at that post until the consecration ceremony in Lafayette.

hen Deshotel is consecrated as Lafayette's new bishop he will be the man responsible for overseeing some 300,000 Catholics in the eight parishes of the Diocese.

The new bishop was ordained in 1978, and he attended Lafayette's Immaculata High School before getting both a bachelor's and master's degree.

The Diocese says that details about the installation of Deshotel as Bishop will be announced in the future.
