LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — The new bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette has been installed in his new position.

Local media report that a ceremony was held Friday for Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel, who becomes the seventh bishop for the diocese.

Deshotel is no stranger to south Louisiana. Deshotel, 64, is a native of Basile. He attended seminary in Lafayette.

He replaces Bishop Michael Jarrell who will be in residence in Sts. Peter and Paul parish in Scott and will serve as an administrator in the diocese.

Following the ceremony, the bishop called Lafayette "the happiest city in the United States."

He has been serving in the Diocese of Dallas since 1978.
