• Investors overlooked today's release of the Richmond Fed's regional manufacturing survey, which showed economic activity in the central Atlantic region declined sharply in August.

• Instead, the market remained fixated on Fed Chairman Bernanke's scheduled speech in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Friday. Investors are hoping for potential signs of additional measures to stimulate the economy.

• Gold prices pulled back to $1,863/ounce.
