Investors overlooked today's release of the Richmond Fed's regional manufacturing survey, which showed economic activity in the central Atlantic region declined sharply in August.
Instead, the market remained fixated on Fed Chairman Bernanke's scheduled speech in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Friday. Investors are hoping for potential signs of additional measures to stimulate the economy.
Gold prices pulled back to $1,863/ounce.
And Crude oil closed at $85.44 a barrel.
