Driver Arrested After Apparent Suicide Attempt

An apparent suicide attempt turns unsuccessful, then into an arrest.

Sheriff Louis Ackal with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office says Dwayne P. Shaw of New Iberia allegedly drove his vehicle into oncoming traffic at the intersection of Highway 182 and Laperouse, hitting another vehicle.

He survived and now faces a slew of charges, including aggravated criminal damage to property, second degree cruelty to a juvenile, aggravated obstruction of a highway of commerce, two counts of aggravated battery, driving left of center, no seat belt, driving under suspension and failure to register his vehicle.

Two passengers in the victim's vehicle, a six month old infant and a 37-year-old male, have been transported to a local hospital for injuries.
