HOUMA, La. (AP) — Relatives of a Dularge man who suffered brain damage in an August traffic accident pleaded with a judge to issue a stiff sentence for the driver in the case.

The Courier reports that 55-year-old Derrol Boudreaux pleaded no-contest to a Driving While Intoxicated charge on Tuesday.

The accident victim was 42-year-old Francis Naquin. State police said he was walking on Bayou Dularge Road when he was hit by the passenger-side mirror of the truck Boudreaux drove.

Family members told Judge Randy Bethancourt that Naquin has had three brain surgeries and breathes and eats through tubes.

Boudreaux's attorney notes that a grand jury decided against a negligent injury charge in the case.

Bethancourt will sentence Boudreaux on Sept. 20.
